POLITICS/MEDIA: Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, Newsom taking on a second job, Lt. Gov. to host a weekly hour-long interview show on Current TV....

* San Francisco Chronicle:  "Gavin Newsom to host Current TV show" - From the Chronicle:

Just a few weeks after its ugly breakup with progressive talk show host Keith Olbermann, San Francisco's Current TV has found another liberal spokesman - this one with a full-time political job - to fill its airwaves: California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom. The network said Tuesday that Newsom will host the weekly hour-long "Gavin Newsom Show" beginning in May. The former San Francisco mayor's show will have "a decidedly California touch as Newsom interviews notables from Silicon Valley, Hollywood and beyond."

Newsom, in an interview Wednesday, said he will continue his day job as second in command to Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown - a job in which he has at times, publicly expressed frustration. The lieutenant governor said he does not believe there is any conflict of interest in taking the TV job, and said he is "donating the (Current TV) salary to charity" to avoid the appearance of any conflict.

Brown's office said it has no problem with the TV post and that it poses no conflict with Newsom's official duties. "It sounds pretty cool. We wish him the best," said Gil Duran, spokesman for the governor, who has appeared as a guest on Current TV.

Newsom said he grabbed the opportunity to interview and hold conversations with "the remarkable people of this amazing state" - business leaders, creative stars and innovators - in what he calls "a search for ideas" that could help solve the problems facing the nation.

Newsom - long considered a rising Democratic star and a possible future candidate for California governor or the U.S. Senate - joins a growing crowd of political figures who have joined the media. They include former New York Gov. Elliot Spitzer and former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, both regulars on Current TV, as well as New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who hosts a local radio show, and former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, a Chronicle columnist.

While Newsom's new job isn't his first in media - he appeared regularly on a radio show dealing with environmental issues when he was mayor - it does represent a departure in politics................
