Mayor Villaraigosa today announced that former Los Angeles housing official Mercedes Márquez will return to LA as the Deputy Mayor for Housing and the Interim General Manager of the LA Housing Department.
Márquez served for the past three years in the Obama administration as the Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development at HUD, and was the general manager for the LA Housing Department from 2004 through mid-2009.
Márquez will oversee the Housing Department, Housing Authority, Homeless Services Authority, and share oversight for the Community Development Department.
Prior to her earlier service with the City of Los Angeles, Márquez was vice president of McCormack Baron Salazar, Inc., a national firm specializing in the development, consultation, and management of urban communities. Márquez first served at HUD as the senior counsel for civil rights and fair housing to HUD Secretary Andrew Cuomo during President Bill Clinton’s second term.
